Intranet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An intranet is like a private website or network that only a few special computers can connect to. Think of it as a secret club online! Companies often use intranets as their own internal websites. This helps employees find out what's happening in the company without sharing that information with everyone outside.

An intranet works very much like a regular website you visit every day. A system administrator (the person who manages the computer systems) can add new pages to it. You can then open these pages using a web browser, just like you would with any other website.

What is an Intranet?

An intranet is a computer network that is private. It is only for people within a specific group. This group could be a company, a school, or even a government office. It helps them share information safely.

How Intranets Work

Intranets use the same technology as the internet. They use things like TCP/IP (which helps computers talk to each other) and HTTP (which helps web pages load). But unlike the internet, an intranet is closed off. It has firewalls and other security tools. These tools stop people from outside the group from getting in.

Benefits of Using an Intranet

Intranets are very useful for many reasons:

  • Sharing Information: They make it easy to share news, policies, and documents. Everyone in the group can see the same information.
  • Working Together: People can work on projects together. They can share files and discuss ideas in a secure place.
  • Saving Time: Employees can quickly find information they need. This means less time searching and more time working.
  • Building Community: An intranet can help people feel more connected. They can learn about company events or other team members.

Intranets and National Networks

Sometimes, countries create their own versions of an intranet. These are national networks that are separate from the global internet. They allow the government to control what information citizens can see online.

The Runet Example

Russia has tested something called Runet. This is a country-wide network that could work as an alternative to the global internet. Experts say that some countries want to control what their citizens see online. They look at what countries like Iran and China have done.

If a country uses a system like Runet, it means people might not be able to see all information. They might not have access to discussions about what is happening in their own country. They could be kept within their own "bubble" of information. This is different from the open internet, where you can usually find many different views.
