Ruth Amiran (Hebrew: רות עמירן; 1914 – December 14, 2005) was an important Israeli archaeologist. She was born Ruth Brandstetter. Her book, Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land: From Its Beginnings in the Neolithic Period to the End of the Iron Age, was published in 1970. This book is still a very important guide for archaeologists who work in Israel today.

Who Was Ruth Amiran?

Ruth Amiran was born in a small farming village called Yavne'el. This village is in the Galilee area. At that time, the area was part of the Ottoman Empire. Her father, Yehezkel Brandshteter, came from Poland in 1908. He married her mother, Devora, in 1913.

Early Life and Education

Ruth went to school in the city of Haifa. Later, in 1933, she became one of the very first students to study archaeology. She studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This was a big step for women in science!
