Ruth Machado Lousada Rocha, known as Ruth Rocha, was born on March 2, 1931. She is a famous Brazilian writer who creates books for children. She is one of the most important authors in the new wave of Brazilian children's literature, alongside writers like Lygia Bojunga and Ana Maria Machado. Ruth Rocha studied Political Sociology at the University of São Paulo. She also studied Educational Orientation at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Since October 25, 2007, she has been a member of the Paulista Academy of Arts.

Ruth Rocha's Books and Stories
Ruth Rocha started her writing career in 1967. She wrote articles for different education magazines, including Cláudia. In 1976, she published her very first book. It was called Palavras Muitas Palavras (which means "Many, Many Words").
Ruth Rocha has written more than 130 books. Her books have been printed over 500 times. They have also been translated into more than 25 languages around the world. She has sold about 17.5 million copies of her books in Brazil. Another 2.5 million copies have been sold in other countries. One of her most famous books is Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo. This book has sold over two million copies. In English, its title is Marcelo, Martello, Marshmallow.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Ruth Rocha has received many honors for her work. In 1998, the former President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, honored her. She received the Order of Cultural Merit from Brazil's Ministry of Culture. This award recognizes people who have made important contributions to culture.
In 2002, she became a member of the PEN CLUB. This is a worldwide group for writers in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, her book Escrever e Criar (meaning "To Write and Create") won the Jabuti Prize of Literature. The Jabuti Prize is one of the most important literary awards in Brazil.
