Ruxton Island facts for kids
Ruxton Island is a small, beautiful island in British Columbia, Canada. It is one of six islands in the De Courcy Islands group. This island is a special part of the southern Gulf Islands. It sits southeast of DeCourcy Island, separated by a narrow stretch of water called Ruxton Passage.
About seven families live on Ruxton Island all year. Many more people visit during warmer months, staying in about 110 cabins.

Exploring Ruxton Island
Ruxton Island is mostly made of sandstone rock. It has many interesting natural features.
Island Passages
Ruxton Passage is to the north, separating Ruxton Island from De Courcy Island. To the south, Whaleboat Passage separates Ruxton from Pylades Island. These passages are important waterways around the island.
Island Trails
There are about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of trails on Ruxton Island. These trails are great for exploring the island's forests and natural beauty.
Ruxton Island's Bays
Several bays dot the coastline of Ruxton Island. Each bay has its own unique features.
Herring Bay
Herring Bay is found at the northwest corner of the island. When entering Herring Bay, boats should stay between a special marker and a small islet to the east. There is a reef near Herring Bay that can be tricky for boats. It is often exposed at low tide. This small islet was recently named "Long Point." It honors Ted Long, who lived here for many years.
Nayler Bay
A smaller bay, known as Nayler Bay, is located about halfway down the west side of the island. It is named after the Nayler family. They sold the island to Frank Ney, a former mayor of Nanaimo, B.C. He then divided the island into 199 private lots. Waterfront properties are usually about half an acre in size. Inside lots are typically larger, around two acres.
North Bay and Otter Bay
North Bay is located on the north side of Ruxton Island. Otter Bay is found on the east side. These bays offer more beautiful coastal views and access points.
Wetland Habitat
In the middle of Ruxton Island, there is a wetland that is about 10 acres in size. This wetland is a home for many birds. Canada Geese often build their nests here during their visiting season. You might see many pairs of geese in the wetland. Many smaller waterfowl also live in this wetland all year round.

Island Animals
The animals that live on Ruxton Island include otters, mink, Douglas squirrels, and mice. These creatures make their homes in the island's forests and along its shores.
Island Forests
The island is covered with many types of trees. You can find Douglas fir, balsam fir, red cedar, maple, vine maple, arbutus, shore pine, Garry oak, Red Alder, and willow trees. These trees create a beautiful and diverse forest environment.
