A Look Back: The Station's History
The Rydal railway station first opened on 1 July 1870. It was an important stop on the railway line. The line was extended from Lithgow to Rydal. Later, the tracks reached Tarana and then Bathurst.
On 14 March 1915, the railway line was made bigger. A second platform was built. This meant more trains could use the station. However, the station closed on 27 May 1989. The second track was removed in 1998. The station building has since been turned into a library.
What Does the Station Look Like?
The Rydal railway station area includes several key parts:
- The original station building, which also served as a home. It was built in 1869.
- A small signal box, added around 1914. This controlled the train signals.
- The platforms, made from stone and brick.
- A war memorial, which honors soldiers.

Why Rydal Station is Special
Rydal railway station is very important because it shows how railways were built a long time ago. The station building still looks much like it did when it opened in 1870. It is a key part of the Rydal area. The station helps us understand the history of the town.
This station building is also special because it was built as both a station and a home. There are only a few of these types of buildings left. Many similar stations further west have been changed a lot. Rydal station gives us a rare look at early railway design. The other parts of the station show how the railway system grew over time.
Rydal railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999. This means it is protected for future generations.
