The Image Centre is a cool place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where you can explore photography and art. It used to be called the Ryerson Image Centre. This centre is like a museum that belongs to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).
You can find it in a renovated old warehouse building on TMU's campus, at Gould and Bond Streets. The Image Centre has galleries to show art, spaces to keep important collections, and areas for teaching, research, and exhibitions. It even shares its building with the School of Image Arts!

A Look at the Image Centre's History
The Image Centre officially opened its doors on September 29, 2012. It was designed by a famous Toronto architect named Donald Schmitt. He made sure the building had lots of great features for visitors and researchers.
What's Inside the Building?
The building has several special areas:
- Three public gallery spaces where you can see amazing photos and art.
- A glass-covered entrance area called the Colonnade. It has a cool digital screen called the Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall.
- A professional research centre with special controls to keep the air just right for delicate items.
- A climate-controlled vault. This is like a super-safe storage room for the centre's collections.
Important Collections and Leadership
The Image Centre was partly created to show off a huge collection of photos. It received about 292,000 pictures from a group called Black Star as a gift.
In August 2013, Paul Roth became the new director of the centre. He used to be a senior curator at another art gallery. In March 2015, the museum got an amazing collection from a photographer named Berenice Abbott. This included more than 6,000 photos and 7,000 negatives!
Why the Name Changed
In July 2022, the centre changed its name to "the Image Centre." This happened after Ryerson University changed its name to Toronto Metropolitan University in April 2022. The university changed its name because of concerns about Egerton Ryerson's past actions and his connection to the Canadian Indian residential school system. The new name helps the centre move forward with a fresh identity.
