Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Süleyman I was born in 1041 and died in 1086. He was an important leader who founded an independent Seljuk Turkish state in Anatolia. He ruled as the Seljuk Sultan of Rûm from 1077 until his death in 1086.

Who Was Süleyman I?

Süleyman I, also known as Süleyman ibn Kutalmish, was a member of the Seljuk royal family. His father, Kutalmish, was a cousin of the great Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan. Süleyman was a brave and skilled military leader. He played a key role in expanding Turkish influence into Anatolia.

Founding the Sultanate of Rûm

Anatolia is a large peninsula in Western Asia, which is now mostly modern-day Turkey. In the 11th century, after the Seljuks won the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, many Turkish tribes moved into Anatolia. Süleyman I took advantage of this. He began to establish his own power in the region.

He started by taking control of important cities. One of his first big achievements was capturing the city of Nicaea (modern-day Iznik) in 1075. This city became the first capital of his new state. He worked to create a stable government in the lands he controlled.

Becoming Sultan

By 1077, Süleyman I had gathered enough power and territory to declare himself Sultan. He named his new state the Sultanate of Rûm. The word "Rûm" came from the Arabic name for the Roman Empire, as these lands had once been part of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire.

Süleyman's goal was to create a strong and independent Turkish state. He had to deal with challenges from the Byzantine Empire. He also faced other Turkish groups and even his own Seljuk relatives. He often used clever diplomacy and military strength to keep his state safe.

Expanding the New State

Süleyman I continued to expand his territory. He moved west towards the Aegean Sea and south towards the Mediterranean Sea. He captured more cities and brought more land under his rule. This helped his new sultanate grow stronger.

He also made agreements with different groups. Sometimes he even helped the Byzantine emperor in their own internal conflicts. This showed his skill as a leader. He knew how to use alliances to his advantage.

Süleyman's Legacy

Süleyman I died in 1086 during a battle near Antioch. He was fighting against another Seljuk ruler, Tutush I. Even though his rule was not very long, he laid the foundations for a powerful state.

The Sultanate of Rûm continued to grow after his death. It became a major power in Anatolia for many years. Süleyman I is remembered as the founder of this important Turkish state. His actions helped shape the history of Anatolia and the wider region.
