Sa Perola Interpretation Centre

Today, Sa Perola is a tourist office and a special center. It teaches visitors about the history of fishing in Calella. It also shares information about the sea traditions of the whole area. Sa Perola is an important historical place for Calella de Palafrugell. It is special because most other net-dyeing houses along the Catalan Coast were destroyed.

History of Sa Perola

The Sa Perola building was probably built in the late 1700s. It was created by the Fishermen's Association of Palafrugell. This building was used to dye cotton fishing nets. Dyeing helped to keep the nets strong and useful for longer. It was also a place where fishermen could meet and gather.

Changes in Ownership

In 1865, a fisherman named Joan Bofill i Codina bought Sa Perola. He was from Calella de Palafrugell. The sailors' union had recently closed down. In 1868, he sold the building to the Fisherman's Guild. This made sure it could be used by all fishermen in the community.

Sa Perola's New Purpose

The use of Sa Perola for dyeing nets slowly decreased. This happened especially after the 1960s. That's when nylon nets became popular. Nylon nets did not need to be dyed. In 1986, the Fishermen's Association gave the Sa Perola building to the City of Palafrugell. They had one condition: it had to be used for the public.

The ground floor of the building became the tourist office for Calella de Palafrugell. Then, in 2010, the Sa Perola Interpretation Center opened. Its goal is to share the history of the sea and fishing in Palafrugell.

What the Center Does

The Sa Perola Interpretation Center works to save knowledge and items from the fishing trade. This includes information about old fishermen's houses, huts, and watchtowers. The project has been put together and documented by several groups. These include the Municipal Archive of Palafrugell and the Palafrugell Economic Promotion Institute (IPEP). The Fishing Museum also helped with this important work.
