Sabanetas is a special area, or barrio, located in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Think of a barrio like a neighborhood or a district within a larger city. Sabanetas is one of 31 barrios in Ponce. It's known as a rural interior barrio, meaning it's more countryside and inland, away from the coast. The name "Sabanetas" comes from a native Indian word. This area was officially started way back in 1831.
Where is Sabanetas Located?
Sabanetas is found in the southern part of the Ponce area. It's located to the east of the main city center, which is where you'd find Plaza Las Delicias. The name "Sabanetas" actually tells you a lot about the place! It means an open valley that is mostly covered in grass, with very few trees.
What is Sabanetas Like?
Sabanetas covers about 2.7 square miles of land. It also has a small amount of water, about 0.1 square miles. In 2010, about 5,534 people lived in Sabanetas. This means there were about 2,034 people living in each square mile.
Several communities are part of Barrio Sabanetas. These include Campo Alegre, Alta Vista, Villa Flores, and the main Sabanetas area itself. Important roads like PR-1, PR-52, and PR-10 help people travel through Sabanetas. The highest point in Sabanetas is a hill called Cerro Los Negrones, which is 397 feet tall.
Important Places in Sabanetas
Sabanetas is home to a few notable spots. One is the Sabanetas Industrial Park, which is a place where different businesses and factories are located. Another historic site is Central Mercedita. This used to be a large sugar mill, a very important part of Puerto Rico's history and economy.
