Known for Microfluidics, Lab-on-a-chip

Elisabeth MJ Verpoorte, often known as Sabeth Verpoorte, is a Canadian professor. She teaches about very tiny systems called microfluidics and "lab-on-a-chip" devices. She works at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Her Journey in Science

Sabeth Verpoorte started her science journey in Switzerland. From 1990 to 1996, she trained as a researcher at a company called CIBA. She learned about automation systems. After that, she led a group at the Institute for Microtechnology in Neuchatel. In 2003, Professor Verpoorte moved to Groningen to start her current job.

What She Researches

Professor Verpoorte's research is super interesting! She tries to copy how living things work inside our bodies onto tiny devices. Think of it like making a mini-version of a living system on a small chip.

She does this by building and controlling tiny chemical detectors. These detectors are put onto chips made of silicon dioxide. This method is great because it means scientists need much smaller amounts of chemicals or cells to do their tests. It saves time and materials!

Her special interest is in controlling how different substances move on these tiny chips using electricity. This helps her create better "lab-on-a-chip" systems.

Helping the Science Community

Sabeth Verpoorte also helps out in the science world. In 2018, she was the President of the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening. This is a big group that helps scientists share new ways to do lab work. She has also been a leader in the Dutch Pharmacy Association. Plus, she has helped organize many international science meetings.
