Festival History
Early Years and Growth
The Sacramento Film and Music Festival started in 2000. By 2004, it was recognized by both Sacramento's Mayor Heather Fargo and California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. They praised the festival's achievements and its positive impact on the community.
In 2006, the festival featured over 90 film and video projects. It also included four live bands over five days. Special programs like Sac Music Seen and the 10x10 Filmmaker Challenge were part of the event. Student Days, a festival just for student films, was also added. The festival was voted Sacramento's "Best Film Festival" by readers of the Sacramento News and Review.
Welcoming Special Guests
In 2007, the festival welcomed important guests from the film world. These included Larry Meistrich, a producer of movies like the Academy Award-winning Sling Blade. Mike DiManno and Scott Reid from Redwood Palms Pictures also attended. Writer and director Joe Carnahan was another special guest.
During the 2007 festival, 99 films were shown in competition. Five short movies made for The Sacramento Bee were also screened. Larry Meistrich met with many filmmakers. This led to four new movie development deals.
Recent Festivals
The 2008 festival ran for ten days in August. It showed 17 feature films and over 100 short films. There were also eight musical acts and many special events. The festival gave out 25 awards that year.
In 2009, the 10th festival opened with a special movie called "Sensored." This film starred Robert Picardo. It was filmed using a special high-definition digital camera called the Red One. The festival also had a New Year's Eve party with live music.
The 2010 festival took place from July 23 to August 1. It opened with a documentary called "Official Rejection." This film was about how hard it can be to get movies into film festivals. A special event featured artist David Garibaldi. He showed his work and painted live. The paintings were sold to help the festival and local arts groups.
In 2011, the festival was split into two parts. WinterFEST happened in January, and SummerFEST was in August. WinterFEST included films about important topics like peace and fairness.
How Films Are Chosen
The Sacramento Film and Music Festival accepts films from all over the world. They welcome movies of all types and lengths. The festival is very selective, meaning they choose only the best films. A special committee watches all the submitted films. They decide which ones will be shown at the festival. A separate jury chooses the award winners. The audience also gets to vote for their favorite films.
Special Programs
Sac Music Seen
The Sac Music Seen program helps local musicians and filmmakers work together. Filmmakers create music videos for local bands. The festival also shows music videos in its general program. This program has created 150 original music videos since 2004.
10x10 Filmmaker Challenge
The 10x10 Filmmaker Challenge is a fun program. Filmmakers have just 10 days to make a movie. The movie must be 10 minutes or less. Each year, there is a special theme for the films. This program started in 2004 with seven films. It has now become the closing event of the festival. About 70 original projects have been made for this challenge.
Sony Creative Software Student Days
Student Days was added to the festival in 2006. This program shows movies made by student filmmakers. The first Student Days featured 20 projects. These films came from many different universities and art schools. In 2007, the program was renamed Sony Creative Software Student Days. This was to thank Sony for their support.
