About Sade Adeniran
Early Life and Education
Sade Adeniran was born in London, England. Her parents were from Nigeria. When she was eight years old, she moved to her father's village in Nigeria. She spent her childhood living with her grandmother in a place called Idogun, in Ondo State. Later, she returned to the UK.
Sade studied Media and English at Plymouth University. She also spent some time studying in the United States. She was an exchange student at the University of Massachusetts.
Becoming a Writer
Sade started her writing journey with a radio play. It was for a university project and called Memories of a Distant Past. She sent it to the BBC, and they produced it for their "First Bite" Festival! After that, she wrote other plays. Her work was performed in famous London theatres. These included the Lyric Theatre and the Bush Theatre.
She worked as a business consultant while writing her first novel, Imagine This. It took her five years to finish the book. She tried to get publishers to print it, but they said no. They felt there wasn't a market for a story about a young girl in rural Nigeria. Sade decided to believe in herself. She left her job and chose to publish the book herself. She printed 1100 copies. To sell them, she made a website and promoted her book on local radio and TV.
Her Famous Book: Imagine This
Imagine This tells the story of a girl named Lola. It covers 10 years of her life through her diaries. Lola is sent from her home in London to live with relatives in Nigeria when she is nine. People often ask Sade if the story is about her own life. She says, "It is and it isn't." Some parts are based on real events. The village in the book is where Sade grew up. However, the things that happen to Lola are not what happened to Sade.
This novel won the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in the African region. It was also considered for the World Book Day "Books to Talk About" award. A publishing company, Cassava Republic Press, later published it in 2011.
Filmmaking and Other Works
Sade Adeniran is also a filmmaker. She is currently working on turning her novel, Imagine This, into a movie. This film project has already won an award for Best Script Talent at the British Urban Film Festival. She is also developing another film called A Mother's Journey.
In 2019, Sade contributed to an important book called New Daughters of Africa. This book is a collection of writings by African women, edited by Margaret Busby.
