About Sade Adeniran

Sade Adeniran was born in London, England. Her parents were from Nigeria. When she was eight years old, she moved to her father's village in Nigeria. She lived there with her grandmother in a place called Idogun. Later, she moved back to the United Kingdom.

Her Education and Early Writing

Sade went to Plymouth University. She studied Media and English there. She also spent time studying in the United States. This was part of an exchange program at the University of Massachusetts.

She started her writing journey with a radio play. It was a project for her last year at university. The play was called Memories of a Distant Past. She sent it to the BBC, and they produced it! It was part of BBC Radio 4's "First Bite" Festival. After that, she wrote other plays for the theater. Her work was performed in London at famous places. These included the Lyric Theatre and the Bush Theatre.

Publishing Imagine This

Sade worked as a business consultant for a while. At the same time, she spent five years writing her first novel. The book was titled Imagine This. She tried to get traditional publishers interested. However, they felt there wasn't a market for a story about a young girl in rural Nigeria.

Sade decided to publish the book herself. She left her job to focus on this dream. She printed 1100 copies of her book. To sell them, she created a website. She also worked hard on marketing. This included appearing on local radio and television shows.

About Imagine This

Imagine This is told through a character's diaries. It covers 10 years in the life of a girl named Lola. Lola is sent from her home in London to live with relatives in Nigeria. She is nine years old when she moves.

People often ask Sade if the story is about her own life. She says, "It is and it isn't." Some parts of the book are based on real events. The village in the book is where Sade grew up. However, the things that happen to Lola are not exactly what happened to Sade.

The novel won the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize. It was named Best First Book in the African region. It was also considered for the World Book Day "Books to Talk About" award. The book was later published by Cassava Republic Press in 2011.

Sade as a Filmmaker

Sade Adeniran is also a filmmaker. She is currently working on turning her novel, Imagine This, into a movie. The film project has already done very well. It reached the second round of the Sundance Screenwriters' Lab. It also won an award for Best Script Talent at the British Urban Film Festival.
