The Saginaw Daily Courier was a newspaper that people read in Saginaw, Michigan. It was printed from 1868 to 1881. This newspaper started from an older local paper called the East Saginaw Courier. Over time, it joined with other newspapers. Eventually, it became what we know today as The Saginaw News.

History of the Saginaw Daily Courier

Early Days: The East Saginaw Courier

The story of this newspaper begins with The East Saginaw Courier. It was first printed in June 1859. A person named George F. Lewis started it. The newspaper was made in East Saginaw, Michigan. This city was located on the Saginaw River. It was also near the "thumb" area of Michigan. East Saginaw is not a city anymore.

George F. Lewis was the owner, also called the proprietor. He was also the first editor of the newspaper. An editor is someone who decides what goes into the paper. At first, it was a weekly newspaper. It had four pages and came out every Thursday.

In 1861, Lewis sold his printing machines. He sold them to Perry Joslin. Joslin owned another paper called Saginaw Weekly Enterprise. Lewis made a deal so he could still use the machines if he needed them. In 1863, The East Saginaw Courier got new, better printers. Captain Lyon helped pay for these new machines. He then became a partner in the newspaper business. The newspaper's main office moved around East Saginaw many times. It moved at least six times between 1859 and 1866.

Growing and Merging Newspapers

By 1868, the Saginaw Courier Company was busy. They were printing two newspapers at once. One was the Saginaw Daily Courier. The other was the weekly East Saginaw Courier. George F. Lewis was still in charge of both. The weekly paper slowly stopped being printed by 1881. After that, the two papers became just The Saginaw Courier.

The Saginaw Courier Company bought another newspaper in 1889. This paper was called Saginaw Daily Herald. When they joined together, the new paper was named the Courier-Herald.

Famous Owners and New Names

Over the years, some important people owned this newspaper. Two Michigan state governors owned it at different times. They were Aaron T. Bliss and Chase S. Osborn. A governor is the leader of a state.

In 1918, another paper bought the Courier-Herald. This paper was called the Saginaw Evening News. After this, the newspaper changed its name a few times. It became the Saginaw News Courier. Then it was called the Saginaw Daily News. Finally, in the mid-1930s, it became The Saginaw News.
