Saint Andrew's Memorial Episcopal Church is an old and important church building in Detroit, Michigan. Today, Wayne State University uses it as a special place called St. Andrew's Hall. It's a historic spot that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because of its special history.
A Look Back in Time
The St. Andrew's church group, also called a parish, began in 1885. This was one of the first religious groups in what is now the University–Cultural Center area of Detroit. By January 1886, the group had already built a church. It was located at the corner of Fourth and Putnam streets.
In the early 1890s, plans for the church you see today were drawn up. A famous architecture firm from Boston, Cram, Wentworth & Goodhue, designed it. There was a small delay in building, but the church was finally finished in 1902.
In 1906, a fire caused by electricity damaged the church. It took six years to repair it. However, the repairs did not bring back the church's first design. Some people thought the new look was not as good as the original. The church served the Episcopalian group for many years. After World War II, many people moved away from the area to the suburbs.
In 1961, the church leaders rented the building to Wayne State University for 99 years. The university now uses it as a chapel for students and a place for concerts.
What the Church Looks Like
St. Andrew's church shows off straight, strong lines. These lines are typical of buildings designed by Ralph Adams Cram. The outside of the church is made from Bedford limestone. It has special trimmings made of Berea sandstone. There isn't much fancy carving on the stone.
Inside the church, you'll see rows of huge columns. These columns stand tall in the main part of the church, called the nave. Behind the altar, where services are held, there is a very large window.
