About the Painting
This painting was originally part of a larger group of artworks. El Greco created a series of paintings featuring the apostles for a church in Almadrones, Spain. He also made similar sets for the Toledo Cathedral.
Who is Saint Paul?
Even though Saint Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles, he was very important. He was known as the "Apostle of the Gentiles," meaning he spread Christian teachings to people who were not Jewish. In these painting series, Saint Paul took the place of Judas, who was one of the original twelve apostles but betrayed Jesus.
What's in His Hand?
In the painting, Saint Paul holds a letter in his left hand. This letter is addressed to "Titus, ordained first Bishop of the Church of the Cretans." Titus was a close helper and secretary to Saint Paul.
