Skateboarding Career Highlights
Salvador Barbier was a true pioneer in the world of skateboarding. He helped create the idea of "signature" skate shoes. These are special shoes designed by a pro skater and named after them.
Designing Iconic Skate Shoes
Barbier designed the famous Etnies SLB 23 shoe. This shoe, first released in 1993, is considered one of the most iconic skate shoes ever made. People loved it so much that it has been re-released many times. Salvador also designed the MID and 97 editions for ES Footwear. His ideas helped change how modern skateboarding shoes look and perform. These shoes also set the standard for how professional skateboarders get deals to promote footwear brands.
SLB's Pro Skateboarding Moves
As a professional skateboarder, Sal was one of the first six members of the original Plan B team. One of his most famous tricks is the "Sal Flip." This trick is still a big part of skateboarding culture today. You can even find it in popular skateboarding video games, how-to guides, and training apps.
Salvador was also the first pro skateboarder to do two amazing tricks:
- A kickflip to board slide on a handrail.
- A front side big spin on a handrail.
His incredible skills were shown in the classic 1989 skate video Hokus Pokus.
Leading Skate Companies
Barbier started and led several skateboarding companies that were very important in the 1990s. These companies still influence many brands today. As a creative director, Sal continues to work with Aesthetics Skateboards, which makes limited-edition skateboards, and on special projects with other brands.
