What is Salisbury House?
Salisbury House started in downtown Winnipeg in 1931. A man named Ralph Erwin founded it. He named his new restaurant after the salisbury steak. Ralph Erwin did not like the word 'hamburger'. So, he called his burgers "nips." He wanted people to think of them as a small "nip," or bite, of Salisbury steak.
Locations and People
Today, Salisbury House has 12 restaurants. All of them are located in Winnipeg. The company employs more than 500 people.
Over the years, the ownership of Salisbury House has changed a few times. Ralph Erwin sold most of his share in 1979. Later, in 2001, a group of local investors bought the chain.
The Bridge Restaurant
In the mid-2000s, a Salisbury House restaurant opened on the Esplanade Riel bridge. This bridge is for people walking or biking. However, this location became a seasonal restaurant in 2008. This meant it was only open during certain times of the year. The company said not enough people visited it. The restaurant on the bridge closed completely in January 2013.
Recent Ownership Changes
In December 2017, the main owners, Earl and Cheryl Barish, sold their part of the chain. A new group of partners bought it. This group included the Metis Economic Development Fund. However, by July 2019, Earl and Cheryl Barish became partners in the chain again. This happened less than two years after they had sold it.
