How Sals Began
Salisbury House was started in 1931 by a man named Ralph Erwin. He opened the very first restaurant in Downtown Winnipeg. Ralph Erwin named his new restaurant after the salisbury steak.
He didn't like the word 'hamburger' for his burgers. So, he decided to call his burgers "nips." He wanted people to think of them as a small 'nip' or bite of Salisbury steak.
Sals Today
Today, Salisbury House has twelve restaurants in Winnipeg. More than 500 people work for the company. It's a big part of the food scene in Manitoba.
Changes in Ownership
Over the years, Salisbury House has had a few different owners. In 1979, Ralph Erwin sold most of his share in the company to a group of investors. Later, in 2001, a group of local investors from Winnipeg bought the chain from its owners in Montreal.
In December 2017, the main owners, Earl and Cheryl Barish, sold the company to a new group. This group included the Metis Economic Development Fund (MEDF), David Filmon, Brad Kramble, and some of the senior managers at Salisbury House. However, less than two years later, in July 2019, Earl and Cheryl Barish became partners in the chain again!
The Bridge Location
In the mid-2000s, a Salisbury House restaurant opened on the new Esplanade Riel pedestrian bridge. This was a unique spot! But in 2008, the restaurant became seasonal, meaning it was only open at certain times of the year. The company said that not enough people were visiting, so it was hard to keep the bridge location open all the time. The restaurant on the bridge finally closed in January 2013.
