Early Life and Education

Sally was encouraged to become a teacher, just like her father. She finished school at Maryland State Normal School in 1896. However, Sally had a special interest. She once played Florence Nightingale in a school play. Soon after, she lost a friend to a serious illness called diphtheria. These events made her want to become a nurse. She then graduated from Maryland Homoepathic Training School for Nurses in 1898.

A Pioneer in Health Education

Sally Jean worked as an army nurse during the Spanish–American War. After the war, she worked as a private nurse. Later, she became a nurse in schools and playgrounds. Sally then became a leader in education. She even created the term health education. This means teaching people how to live healthy lives.

In 1914, she became the director of Maryland's Social Health Service. In 1917, she moved to New York. There, she helped set up a health service department for the People's Institute. From 1934 to 1935, she oversaw health education for the U.S. Indian Service.

During World War I, Sally saw how health problems affected people. She helped create the Child Health Organization. This group later joined with another to become the American Child Health Association in 1923. Sally worked there as the director of the health education department.

Helping Around the World

From 1924 into the 1950s, Sally Jean worked as a health education expert around the world. She helped create health programs in many places. These included China, Japan, the Philippines, the Virgin Islands, and the Panama Canal Zone. She also worked with companies and for the University of Denver summer school.
