Salvador Antonio Valdés Mesa was born on June 13, 1945, in Amancio Rodríguez, Cuba. He is a very important politician in Cuba. He used to be a leader for groups that represent workers.
Since April 2018, he has been the First Vice President of Cuba. He is also a member of the main leadership group of the Communist Party of Cuba.
Life and Career

Salvador Valdés Mesa joined the Association of Young Rebels in 1961. This was after the Cuban Revolution had succeeded. He became a leader in the Workers' Central Union of Cuba, which is a big organization for workers. He also became a leader in the Communist Party of Cuba.
From 1995 to 1999, he worked as the Minister of Labor and Social Security. This job meant he was in charge of rules about work and helping people with their social benefits. After that, he became a top leader for the Communist Party in the Camagüey province.
Since 1993, Salvador Valdés Mesa has been a deputy in the National Assembly of People's Power. This is like being a member of parliament in other countries. He is also part of the Political Council of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. He is a member of the Council of State and holds one of its five Vice Presidencies.
