José Ramón Machado Ventura (born October 26, 1930) is a Cuban leader and politician. He was the First Vice President of Cuba from 2008 to 2013. When Raúl Castro became President in 2008, Machado took over his role as First Vice President. He also served as the Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba starting in 2011.

Early Life and Education
José Ramón Machado was born on October 26, 1930. His birthplace was San Antonio de las Vueltas in Cuba. He went to school in Camajuaní and Remedios. He studied medicine at the University of Havana and became a medical doctor in 1953.
Joining the Cuban Revolution
After a leader named Fulgencio Batista took control of Cuba in 1952, Machado joined a group that wanted to change the government. He was still a medical student at the time. He became an early member of the 26th of July Movement. This group worked to oppose the government.
Later, he joined the guerrilla fighters in the Sierra Maestra mountains. He fought alongside famous leaders like Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Fidel Castro. In 1958, he became a captain. He was sent to the Oriente area to help open a new fighting front. There, he was in charge of the medical services for the fighters. He set up hospitals and clinics. He was then promoted to the rank of major, known as "comandante."
After the Revolution's Victory
When the revolutionary group won on January 1, 1959, Machado was given important roles. He became the director of medical services in Havana. From 1960 to 1967, he served as the national Minister of Health. During this time, he helped develop Cuba's health care system.
Later, he worked in the province of Matanzas. He helped improve the economy and health care there. He was successful in increasing crop production and improving public transport. He also helped reduce the number of babies who died young. In 1971, he became the first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in the province of Havana. He was also elected to the Politburo in December 1975.
Later Political Roles
José Ramón Machado is a member of the National Assembly of People's Power. He represents the area of Guantánamo. In 2006, he became responsible for overseeing Cuba's international education programs.
On February 24, 2008, he was elected as the First Vice-President of the Council of State. This happened at the same time Raúl Castro became President.
Machado retired from the Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba on April 19, 2021. This was after the 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba. The position of Second Secretary, which he held, was then ended.
