The Sam Perley Farm is a very old and important farm located on Perley Road in Naples, Maine. It was built way back in 1809. This farm is a great example of a building style called the Federal period architecture. It's also famous for being connected to the Perley family for a very long time. The farm has several old buildings, including a carriage house, a wellhouse, and a barn, all built in the 1800s. Because of its history, the farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Discovering the Perley Farm's History

The Perley Farm is found in the northwest part of Naples, Maine. It sits on the north side of Perley Road. The farm has a big wooden house with an attached section and a carriage barn. There's also a separate barn and a wellhouse.

The Main Farmhouse Design

The main house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It's built in the Federal style, which was popular in the early 1800s. The house has a pointed roof and a chimney in the middle. Its outside walls are covered with wooden boards. The house sits on a strong granite foundation.

The front of the house has five window sections. The main entrance sticks out a bit and has its own small pointed roof. A two-and-a-half story section extends from the back of the house. This part also has a chimney. Attached to this section is a one-and-a-half story carriage house, which has a sloped roof.

Architectural Details and Changes

The main house's roof has small windows that stick out, called dormers. These dormers look like they were added later, in a style called Greek Revival. On the east side of the house, there's also a window bay that was added even later. This bay shows the Italianate style, which was popular in the mid-1800s. These different styles show how the house changed over time.

The Perley Family's Legacy

The house was built in 1809 by Thomas Perley. His family had been important in the area for a long time. An earlier Thomas Perley was one of the first people to own land in the town of Bridgton in 1763. Naples was later formed from parts of Bridgton.

Thomas's father, Squire Enoch Perley, was one of the very first settlers in Bridgton. Thomas's son, Samuel Perley (who lived from 1817 to 1881), became a very important person in the community. He was the head of the local farming group and even served in the state government. Samuel Perley was also one of the people who helped start the school that later became the University of Maine. He was well-known across the state when he passed away.
