Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube, often called just Sampaio Corrêa or Sampaio, is a popular Brazilian football club. It was started on March 25, 1923, by young workers who loved playing football. They played on São Pantaleão Street in São Luís, Brazil. This is why the club is sometimes called "Tricolor of Saint Pantaleon."
The club's name and colors (red, green, and yellow) were inspired by a special airplane. This plane, called the Sampaio Corrêa II Hydroplane, landed in São Luís in December 1922. Sampaio Corrêa is known for having the largest fan base in the state of Maranhão. Their mascot is a shark, and they play their home games at the Castelão stadium.
Sampaio Corrêa has won many titles. They have won the Maranhense Championship 37 times. They are also the only club from Maranhão to win the Copa Norte (in 1998) and the Copa do Nordeste (in 2018). This makes them the only Brazilian club to win two different regional championships. They are also the only Brazilian club to win three different national divisions: Série B (in 1972), Série C (in 1997), and Série D (in 2012).

Club History
How Sampaio Corrêa Started
Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube was founded on March 25, 1923. Its first president was Abrahão Andrade. The club got its name from a seaplane called Sampaio Corrêa II. This plane visited São Luís on December 12, 1922. It was flown by two pilots, Euclides Pinto Martins from Brazil and Walter Hinton from America.
The club played its first official match on April 26, 1925. Sampaio Corrêa won that game 1–0 against Luso Brasileiro. The winning goal was scored by a player named Lobo.
Winning National Titles
On December 17, 1972, Sampaio Corrêa won the Brazilian Second Division. They beat Campinense in the final match. However, they did not get promoted to the first division that year.
In 1997, the club won the Brazilian Third Division. They defeated Francana 3–1 in the final game. This win helped them move up to the Second Division the next year.
Regional and International Success
In 1998, Sampaio Corrêa won the Copa Norte, a regional tournament. They beat São Raimundo-AM in the final. In the same year, the club also played in an international tournament called the Copa CONMEBOL. They reached the semi-finals, beating América de Natal and Deportes Quindío from Colombia. They were eventually eliminated by Santos FC. Sampaio is the only team from Maranhão to play in an official international tournament.
Recent Seasons
Sampaio Corrêa returned to the Serie B for the 2014 season. They had a good run in the 2013 Série C, finishing fourth and reaching the final. They lost to Santa Cruz 2–1 overall.
After that, the club faced some challenges and was relegated (moved down a division) in 2016 and 2018. However, they had a strong 2020 season, finishing sixth in the league. In the 2022 season, Sampaio finished fifth, just missing out on promotion. During that season, they beat Vasco, a traditional club, twice. They also had big wins against Sport (4–1) and Grêmio (2–1).
Home Stadium
Sampaio Corrêa plays its home matches at the Castelão stadium. This stadium can hold up to 40,000 people. It is where many exciting games take place.
