A month after Ms. Brouk announced her campaign, Senator Funke decided not to run again. This meant he would retire. Samra Brouk then became the only person running from the Democratic Party. In the main election in 2020, she ran against Christopher Missick, a Republican. Ms. Brouk won the election with 57% of the votes. Mr. Missick received 42%. This win changed the district from Republican to Democratic.
