Who Was Samuel Bond?
Samuel Bond was the son of Denis Bond. His father was also a politician who worked in the Parliament of England. Samuel's mother was Lucy Lawrence.
Samuel's School Days
Samuel started studying at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university, in 1639. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1642. He then went on to study law at a place called Inner Temple in London, also in 1642.
Becoming a Lawyer
In 1646, Samuel earned another degree, a Master of Arts (MA), from Cambridge. He also became a Fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, which means he was a special member of the college. He worked there until 1649. In 1648, he officially became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the bar."
Samuel Bond's Time in Politics
Samuel Bond became a politician, just like his father. He was elected to the House of Commons of England, which is part of the English Parliament.
Representing Poole
In 1659, Samuel Bond was chosen by the people of Poole to be their representative in Parliament. This was during a time called the Third Protectorate Parliament.
Representing Weymouth and Melcombe Regis
In 1660, he was also elected to represent Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in a new Parliament called the Convention Parliament. However, there was a problem with his election. More than one person was chosen for the same spot, which was called a "double return." Because of this, his election was cancelled on May 5, 1660.
Working for the Town
Even though his election to Parliament was cancelled, Samuel Bond still worked for the town. He became the Recorder of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. A Recorder was a legal officer who advised the town on laws and helped with court cases.
Samuel Bond's Family
Samuel Bond passed away in 1673. He was buried in a town called Dorchester on May 31st of that year. He had a brother named Nathaniel Bond and a half-brother named John Bond.
