Samuel Samuel (born April 7, 1855 – died October 23, 1934) was a British businessman. He was also a politician for the Conservative Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in the UK, from 1913 to 1934. Samuel Samuel made many important investments in East Asia, especially in Japan. He was also one of the people who helped start the company that later became Royal Dutch Shell.
Early Life and Business
Samuel Samuel was born in London, England. He came from a Jewish family. With his older brother, Marcus Samuel, he started a company called Samuel Samuel & Co. They opened this business in Yokohama, Japan.
His brother Marcus also created the company that would become the Shell Transport and Trading company. The trading company Samuel Samuel helped start was very important for Japan. It helped Japan grow its industries and get the fuel it needed. This was a big part of Japan's journey to become a modern, industrial country.
Political Career
Samuel Samuel wanted to be a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the House of Commons. He tried to get elected several times. He ran in elections in Leeds West in 1906 and January 1910, but he did not win. He also tried in Sunderland in December 1910, but was not successful there either.
Finally, Samuel Samuel was elected as the MP for Wandsworth. This happened in June 1913 during a special election called a by-election. He took over the seat after the previous MP, Sir Henry Kimber, left.
In 1918, his constituency was changed. He was then elected to represent the new Putney division of Wandsworth. He continued to serve as an MP for this area until he passed away in October 1934. He was 79 years old when he died.
