The main way people in San Ignacio Río Muerto earn a living is through farming.
Farming: Growing Food for Everyone
A lot of land, about 35,000 hectares (that's like 86,000 football fields!), is used for farming. Most of these farms use special systems to water their crops.
Farmers here grow many different kinds of food. Some of the most important crops are:
- Wheat (used to make bread and pasta)
- Garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas)
- Safflower (a plant used for oil and dyes)
- Sorghum (a grain used for food and animal feed)
- Watermelon
- Chile peppers
- Melons
After the crops are harvested, they are sent to a bigger city called Ciudad Obregón. There, they are prepared and packed up. Many of these crops are then sent to the United States to be sold.

Some people in San Ignacio Río Muerto also raise animals, but on a smaller scale. In 2000, there were more than 6,000 cattle in the area.
