History of the San Jose Building
The San Jose Estates Administration Building was built in 1925. It was created by the people who developed the San Jose Estates area. Later, a big real estate boom ended. Because of this, Alfred I. duPont bought the property.
From Administration to Chapel
When Alfred I. duPont passed away in 1935, his wife, Jesse Ball duPont, received the property. In 1941, Mrs. duPont allowed the building to be used for church services. It then became known as Grace Chapel.
Students from the Bolles Military Academy were located nearby. They also used Grace Chapel for their Sunday worship services.
Becoming an Episcopal Parish
In 1949, Mrs. duPont gave the property to the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. This was so a new church group could be started. By 1951, Grace Chapel officially became an Episcopal Parish. The Reverend Grover Alison was its first priest.
Reverend Alison also served another church at the same time. In 1952, he moved to San Jose to focus on Grace Chapel. In 1971, the name changed from Grace Chapel Parish to San Jose Episcopal Church. This new name better showed the church's wider activities.
The Day School's Beginning
The Day School started as a part of the church's mission. It began with a kindergarten program. The goal was to offer great education in a Christian setting. This tradition continues today. The school has grown a lot. It now serves students from Pre-K 3 up to sixth grade.
The building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Current Use of San Jose Church
San Jose Episcopal Church is still an active church today. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. The current leader of the church is the Reverend Stephen Courtney Britt.
