The San Jose Episcopal Church is a historic building in Jacksonville, Florida. It's located at 7423 San Jose Boulevard. This building was first built in 1925. It was known as the San Jose Estates Administration Building back then. On April 10, 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States. Today, it serves as an Episcopal church.

History of the Building

Early Days as an Administration Building

The San Jose Estates Administration Building was built in 1925. It was created by the people who developed the San Jose Estates area. This building was used to manage the new community. However, a big real estate boom ended. This caused problems for many businesses.

Becoming a Chapel

After the real estate market crashed, Alfred I. duPont bought the property. When he passed away in 1935, his wife, Jesse Ball duPont, took ownership. In 1941, Mrs. duPont allowed the building to be used for church services. It became known as Grace Chapel.

Students from the Bolles Military Academy, which was across the street, also used it. They attended Sunday church services there as a group.

From Chapel to Church

In 1949, Mrs. duPont gave the property to the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. This was done to start a new church community. By 1951, Grace Chapel officially became an Episcopal Parish. The Reverend Grover Alison was its first priest. He also served another church at the same time. In 1952, he focused only on the San Jose church.

In 1971, Grace Chapel Parish changed its name. It became San Jose Episcopal Church. The word "Chapel" no longer fully described all the work the church was doing.

The Day School's Beginning

The church also started a Day School. It began with a kindergarten program. The goal was to offer great education in a Christian setting. This school has grown a lot over the years. Today, it teaches students from Pre-K 3 all the way through sixth grade.

The building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Current Use of the Church

San Jose Episcopal Church is still an active church today. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. The current leader of the church is the Reverend Stephen Courtney Britt.
