Iglesia de San Miguel, en Córdoba (España)
Church of San Miguel in Córdoba, Spain.

San Miguel is a beautiful old church located in Córdoba, Andalusia, a city in southern Spain. It's a Roman Catholic church, meaning it's part of the Christian faith. This church is special because it was one of twelve churches built by order of King Ferdinand III of Castile way back in the early 1200s. He had these churches built after his army took control of the city. In 1931, San Miguel Church was recognized as an important national monument.

A Mix of Old Styles

San Miguel Church shows a cool mix of two different building styles: Romanesque architecture and Gothic architecture. Romanesque buildings are usually strong and simple, with round arches. Gothic buildings are taller and more detailed, with pointed arches and big windows.

Inside the Church

Even though the church was built a long time ago, its inside was updated in 1749. The church has a shape that's almost square. It has a main area called a nave and two side areas called aisles. These parts are all connected without a special cross-shaped section (a transept) that some churches have.

The ends of the church have rounded or many-sided sections called polygonal apses. The ceiling above the main nave is a coffered ceiling. This means it has a pattern of sunken panels, which looks really neat.

Special Features

The main altar inside the church is made of marble and was built in the 1700s. There's also a side entrance with a unique horseshoe arch. This type of arch looks like a horseshoe and was often used in buildings from the time of the Caliphate of Cordoba, which was a powerful Islamic kingdom in Spain many centuries ago. This suggests that part of the church might be even older than the rest!
