This city is an important place in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. It serves as the center for the surrounding area, known as the San Miguel Totolapan municipality.
People and Population
In 2020, about 24,139 people lived in San Miguel Totolapan. Slightly more than half were women (50.8%), and men made up 49.2%. The largest groups of people were young children. This included those aged 0 to 4 years, 5 to 9 years, and 10 to 14 years. Together, these age groups made up about 35.3% of everyone living there.
The way the city is spread out, called urban sprawl, has not been very organized. This means the streets are not well connected. This can affect how easy it is to live there. It also impacts the environment and people's health. In 2020, figures showed that many people faced financial hardship. About 42.6% of the population was in moderate poverty, and 41.7% was in extreme poverty.
History and Language
Long ago, people in San Miguel Totolapan spoke a language called Cuitlatec language. Sadly, this language is now extinct, meaning no one speaks it anymore. The last known speaker of Cuitlatec, a woman named Juana Can, is believed to have passed away in San Miguel Totolapan in the 1960s.
A Tragic Event
On October 5, 2022, a very sad event happened in the town. Several people, including the mayor, Conrado Mendoza Almeda, and his father, lost their lives in an attack at the town hall.
