San Nicolás, Requena facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

San Nicolás (which means Saint Nicholas) is a beautiful Roman Catholic church in Requena, a town in province of Valencia, Spain. It's built in a style called Neoclassic, which means it looks a bit like ancient Greek and Roman buildings. You can find it in the Plaza de San Nicolás.

History of San Nicolás Church

The San Nicolás church was first built a long, long time ago, in the late 1300s. It was built around the same time as two other important churches in Requena, the San Salvador and Santa María.

Damage and Rebuilding

In 1706, the church's front part, called the façade, was damaged. This happened during a big fight in the town as part of the War of the Spanish Succession. Because of this damage, the whole church needed to be fixed up.

The church was rebuilt in the Neoclassic style. A priest named Padre Tosca designed the new look for the front of the church. The big, rounded roof, called the dome, was finished in 1788. Even though much of the church was rebuilt, some parts on the sides still have their original Gothic style supports, called buttresses.

Important Recognition

In 2008, the church was officially recognized as a "Bien de Interés Cultural." This means it's a very important historical and cultural building in Spain. Today, the church is still being restored to keep it looking its best for many more years.
