Sancho Dávila Toledo was an important Spanish bishop. He was born in Ávila, Spain, in 1546. He came from a well-known family. People knew him as a very good preacher. He passed away in Plasencia, Spain, in 1625.

His Life and Career

Early Education

Sancho Dávila Toledo studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He earned a special degree called a doctorate there. This showed he was very learned in his studies about the church.

Becoming a Bishop

After his studies, he became a bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. He served in several different places.

First, he was the bishop of Cartagena. Then, he became the bishop of Jaén in Andalusia. In 1615, he moved to be the bishop of Sigüenza. Seven years later, in 1622, he became the bishop of Plasencia. He stayed in Plasencia until he died. He was also a confessor for Theresa of Avila, a famous Spanish saint.

His Writings

Sancho Dávila Toledo wrote several books and texts in Spanish. These works helped share his knowledge and ideas.

His main writings include:

  • "The Veneration Due to the Bodies and Relics of Saints" (published in Madrid, 1611). This book was about how people should respect holy items and the bodies of saints.
  • "Sermons" (published in Baeza, 1615). These were collections of his speeches given in church.
  • "The Sighs of St. Augustine" (published in Madrid, 1601 and 1626). He translated this work from Latin.
  • He also wrote, but did not publish, the life stories of two important thinkers: Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas.
