Sancho Ordóñez (count) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sancho Ordóñez (born before 1042 – died around 1080) was an important count who lived in the 11th century in the Kingdom of León. His father was Ordoño Bermúdez, who was the son of King Bermudo II of León. His mother was Fronilde Peláez, who also came from a noble family.

Life of Count Sancho

Sancho Ordóñez became a count between 1059 and 1061. This means he was given an important title and a lot of responsibility. He was a trusted advisor in the royal court for his cousins, King Fernando I of León and Queen Sancha of León.

He also worked closely with King Alfonso VI of León and Castile. For example, in 1073, King Alfonso VI chose Count Sancho to help settle a disagreement between the abbot (leader) of the Monastery of San Xulián de Samos and another person. This shows he was seen as fair and wise.

Count Sancho also made donations. In 1077, he gave some land he had inherited from his grandfather to the León Cathedral. This was a common way for noble people to support important religious places.

Family of Count Sancho

Count Sancho married a woman named Onneca Ovéquiz. She was also from a noble family. Together, they had several children:

  • Oveco Sánchez: He also became a count.
  • Bermudo Sánchez
  • Vela Sánchez
  • Fronilde Sánchez: She married another count named Nuño Velázquez. Their children and grandchildren became important figures in history, including ancestors of King Afonso I of Portugal.
  • Jimena Sánchez: She became a nun at a monastery in Ferreira de Pantón. She made a donation of her own lands, which was confirmed by King Alfonso VI.
