Discovering Sandall Park's Past
Before Sandall Park became a park, the land was used for making bricks. The big lake you see today was created because clay was dug out from this area. The park officially opened its gates to the public in 1940, becoming a green space for everyone to enjoy.
What Can You Do at Sandall Park?
Sandall Park offers many cool things to do for visitors of all ages. It's a great place to spend time outdoors with friends and family.
Sports and Games
The park has three football pitches where you can play a game with your friends. There's also a large fishing lake, which used to have small boats for people to rent. That's why some local people still call it the 'Boating Lake'!
Fun Playgrounds for Kids
Sandall Park has two children's playgrounds. One of them was built in 2010. The money for this playground came from special government programs and environmental groups. This playground has equipment that helps kids improve their balance and fitness. There's even a fun play train, which reminds everyone that the park once had a real children's train many years ago. That old train was removed in the late 1970s.
Get Active with Fitness Trails
If you like to stay active, you'll find three fitness trails in the park. These trails have special exercise equipment along the way. It's a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the fresh air.
Meet the Friends of Sandall Park
The Friends of Sandall Park is a group of volunteers who care a lot about the park. They formed in 2003 and are a registered charity. Their main goal is to help promote, support, and improve the park for everyone.
Awards for Their Hard Work
This amazing group has won several awards for their efforts. In 2011, they received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. This is a very high award, similar to an MBE, and it's given to volunteer groups for their outstanding work. The Friends of Sandall Park earned it for helping both park visitors and local wildlife. They have also won local awards, like the Pride in Doncaster Love Where You Live Award in 2012 and the Doncaster Free Press Community Environmental Award.
