Sandro Penna facts for kids
Sandro Penna (born June 12, 1906 – died January 21, 1977) was an Italian poet. He is known for his unique style of poetry.
A Poet's Life
Sandro Penna was born in a city called Perugia, Italy. He spent most of his life living in Rome, the capital of Italy.
Penna did not have a regular job. Instead, he focused on writing poetry and also contributed to different newspapers. His first poems were published in 1932. This happened with help from another famous poet, Umberto Saba.
Sandro Penna often faced financial difficulties. Later in his life, a group of writers and thinkers signed a public statement in a newspaper called Paese Sera to help him.
A famous Italian writer, Pier Paolo Pasolini, described Penna's poetry. He said it was made of "an extremely delicate material of city places, with asphalt and grass, whitewashed walls of poor houses, white marbles of the bridges, and everywhere the sea's breath, the murmur of the river in which the trembling night lights reflect." This shows how Penna's poems captured the feeling of city life and nature.
Sandro Penna passed away in Rome in 1977.
