The Sanskrit Wikipedia (Sanskrit: संस्कृतविकिपीडिया), also called sawiki, is the version of Wikipedia written in the Sanskrit language. It started in December 2003. What is Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a huge online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It's like a giant collection of knowledge from all over the world. It has versions in many different languages, and the Sanskrit Wikipedia is one of them. It's run by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit group.

About the Sanskrit Language

Sanskrit is a very old and important language from India. It is known for its rich history and is often called the "language of the gods." Many ancient Indian texts, like the Vedas and Upanishads, were written in Sanskrit. Even though it's not a commonly spoken language today, it's still studied and respected for its cultural and historical value.

Why a Sanskrit Wikipedia?

The Sanskrit Wikipedia helps keep this ancient language alive in the modern digital world. It allows people who know Sanskrit to share knowledge and information. It's a way to:

  • Preserve and promote the Sanskrit language.
  • Make information available to Sanskrit scholars and students.
  • Connect people who are interested in Sanskrit from all over the world.

How it Works

Just like other Wikipedias, the Sanskrit Wikipedia is built by volunteers. People who know Sanskrit can:

  • Write new articles on different topics.
  • Edit and improve existing articles.
  • Translate articles from other languages into Sanskrit.
  • Add pictures and other media.

All the content on Sanskrit Wikipedia is available for free. It uses special licenses that allow people to share and use the information, as long as they give credit.
