Sant Genís de Bellera, a very old monastery in Spain.

San Genís de Bellera is a very old and ruined building in Senterada, Pallars Jussà, Catalonia, Spain. It used to be a special place called a Benedictine monastery. Monasteries are where monks live and work, often dedicating their lives to religious study and prayer.

What is San Genís de Bellera?

San Genís de Bellera was once a busy monastery. It was a home for Benedictine monks, who are part of a very old Christian group. These monks follow rules set by Saint Benedict. Today, the monastery is mostly in ruins, but its remains tell a story of a long-ago time.

History of the Monastery

The monastery of San Genís de Bellera was started a very long time ago, in the middle of the 9th century. This means it was built around the year 850! A person named Abbot Vulgarà was the one who founded it. An abbot is like the leader of a monastery.

For some time, powerful people called the counts of Pallars helped protect the monastery. They gave gifts and support to keep it going. However, even with this help, the monastery started to have problems. By the 11th and 12th centuries (the 1000s and 1100s), it began to decline. This means it became less important and probably had fewer monks and less money. Eventually, it fell into ruins.
