What is Sant Pere de les Maleses?
Sant Pere de les Maleses started as a Benedictine monastery. Benedictine monks follow a specific set of rules for their religious life. Being a "cave monastery" means it was built into or around a natural cave.
A Look at Its History
This ancient place has a long and interesting story.
Early Beginnings
The monastery was first written about in the year 868. Back then, it was dedicated to a different saint, St. Andrew. It was given to St. Vincent of Oveix, who was an abbot (a leader of a monastery).
Changing Hands and Names
Later, sometime between the years 900 and 1100, the monastery changed owners. It was also rededicated, meaning its name changed to honor St. Peter instead of St. Andrew. This is how it got its current name, Sant Pere (Saint Peter).
Becoming a Simple Church
Over time, Sant Pere de les Maleses became less important. It came under the control of another religious place called Santa Maria de Gerri. Because of this, it lost its status as a full monastery. In 1592, it officially stopped being a monastery and became a simple church. Today, it stands as a historical church, reminding us of its long past.
