History of Santa Ana
The story of Santa Ana began a long time ago. The Pimas, who are native people from northwest Mexico, first settled in an area now known as Santa Ana Viejo. They were drawn there by a mission set up by the Jesuits, a group of priests.
The Santa Ana we know today was founded much later, in 1883. A person named Diego A. Moreno started the town when the Sonoran Railroad was being built through this part of the state. Santa Ana officially became its own municipality, or local government area, in 1935.
Something cool for movie fans: parts of the film The Fast and The Furious were filmed here in Santa Ana during June and July of 2008! Some scenes were also shot in a nearby town called Magdalena de Kino.
Santa Ana's Main Church
A big attraction in Santa Ana is its church. It was built in the 1900s to honor Our Lady of Saint Ana. Every year in July, the whole town celebrates their patron saint with a fun fair and dances.
Economy of Santa Ana
The people of Santa Ana work in a few different ways to support their city.
Farming and Ranching
Farming is a very important activity here. Farmers grow crops like wheat, corn, and different vegetables. They also grow special grasses to feed cattle.
Raising cattle is another big part of the economy. In 2000, there were more than 20,000 cattle in the area! Many young calves are raised here and then sent to the United States.
Local Industries
Santa Ana also has a small but growing industrial area. One large factory, called a maquiladora, provides jobs for about 800 people. These factories often assemble products for export.
