History of Santa Catarina

The name Santa Catarina comes from a Catholic saint named Saint Catherine of Alexandria. This city didn't start like most cities do, with a formal founding ceremony. Instead, it began as a simple resting spot. Travelers going between the cities of Monterrey and Saltillo would stop here to rest. Because of this, its first name was "Estancia de Santa Catarina," which means "Shelter of Santa Catarina."

How Santa Catarina Grew into a City

During the 1800s, Mexico faced an invasion by France. At that time, the president of Mexico, Benito Juárez, stayed in Santa Catarina for a few days while traveling. During his visit, he decided to give Santa Catarina a higher status. He officially made it a "Village."

Santa Catarina remained a village for many years. Then, in 1979, the government of the state of Nuevo León decided to upgrade its status again. This time, Santa Catarina was officially recognized as a "City."

Geography and Nature

Santa Catarina is located about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) southwest of the center of Monterrey. In 2005, the city had a population of about 259,202 people. The wider area, called the municipality, had about 259,896 people. Both the city and the municipality are the sixth largest in population in the state of Nuevo León. The municipality covers a large area of about 984.5 square kilometers (380 square miles). This area includes many smaller towns and places outside the main city.
