Santa Cruz de Óñez facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Santa Cruz de Óñez was an important fort and later a city built a long time ago in what is now Chile. It was founded in May 1594 by a Spanish leader named Martín García Óñez de Loyola.

This fort was built in a special spot near where two rivers, the Bio-Bio and the Laja River, meet. It was on the high ground next to the Rele River in an area called Catiray, about ten kilometers south of the Bio-Bio River. Even though it was on a high spot, it didn't have much water nearby. There were also gold mines across the Rele River, near a stream called Millapoa.

In 1595, the fort became even more important when it was made into a city. It was then given new names: Santa Cruz de Coya or Millacoya.

What Was Santa Cruz de Óñez?

Santa Cruz de Óñez started as a military fort. It was built by the Spanish during a time when they were exploring and settling new lands in South America. The fort helped the Spanish control the area and protect their interests, especially the nearby gold mines.

Why Was This Fort Built?

The Spanish built forts like Santa Cruz de Óñez for a few key reasons:

  • Protection: To defend against attacks from local indigenous groups.
  • Control: To help the Spanish keep control over the land and its resources, like gold.
  • Settlement: To create safe places for Spanish settlers to live and work.

Who Was Martín García Óñez de Loyola?

Martín García Óñez de Loyola was a Spanish governor of Chile. He was in charge of the Spanish settlements and military efforts in the region. Founding forts and cities like Santa Cruz de Óñez was part of his job to expand Spanish influence.

Location and Resources

The location of Santa Cruz de Óñez was chosen for its strategic position, even with the water shortage. Being on high ground offered a good view of the surrounding area, which was useful for defense.

Gold Mines of Millapoa

One of the main reasons for the fort's location was its closeness to gold mines. These mines were across the Rele River, near a stream known as Millapoa. Gold was a very valuable resource for the Spanish, and they wanted to protect the places where it could be found.

From Fort to City

In 1595, just a year after it was founded, Santa Cruz de Óñez was upgraded from a fort to a city. This was a big step, showing that the Spanish planned for it to be a permanent and important settlement. When it became a city, it was also given new names: Santa Cruz de Coya or Millacoya.

What Happened to Santa Cruz de Óñez?

Like many early settlements, Santa Cruz de Óñez faced challenges. The history of these early forts and cities in Chile is often linked to conflicts and changing conditions. Many were eventually abandoned or destroyed due to attacks or other difficulties.
