Santiago Nonualco is a municipality in La Paz department of El Salvador. It is a community with a rich history and a strong connection to its roots.

What's in a Name?

The name "Nonualco" comes from the native Nahuat language. It means "tribe of mutes." There are actually three "Nonualcos" in this area. The other two are San Juan Nonualco and San Pedro Nonualco.

Life in Santiago Nonualco

Life in Santiago Nonualco often involves hard work. For a long time, people mainly grew crops to feed themselves. They also grew sugar cane. This work required a lot of effort under the sun.

Today, there are not many large employers in the area. Santiago Nonualco has a small central market. You can also find a few shops, diners, and bars. There are also some basic services like a doctor's office and a pharmacy. The closest factories are about 25 minutes away by bus. They are located near the airport at El Pedregal.

A Famous Leader

Santiago Nonualco is known for one very famous person. His name was Anastasio "Indio" Aquino. He was a warrior who led an important uprising. This happened against the Spanish in 1832-1833.

Aquino led his group from a cave. This cave is located just north of the El Salvador International Airport. People call it "La cueva de Indio Aquino." It is a quiet place that overlooks the Jiboa River and the airport. After fighting for about seven months, Indio Aquino was captured. He was later executed in San Vicente.
