Santiago Tilantongo is a town and a "municipality" in the state of Oaxaca, located in southwestern Mexico. A municipality is like a local government area, similar to a county or district. This town is part of the Nochixtlán District, which is in the southeastern part of the Mixteca Region.

Life in Santiago Tilantongo

In 2005, about 3,348 people lived in Santiago Tilantongo. They lived in 827 homes. Many people there speak an indigenous language, which is a language native to the area. Most residents, almost everyone, are Roman Catholic.

Education and Health

The municipality has several important services for its people. For younger children, there is a pre-school and an elementary school. Older students can attend a telesecundaria. This is a special type of school that uses television and other media to teach students in rural areas. There is also a rural medical clinic to help people stay healthy.

Local Market and Church

Santiago Tilantongo has a tianguis market. A tianguis is a traditional open-air market in Mexico where people can buy and sell goods. The town also has a beautiful Dominican church. This church was built a very long time ago, during the early colonial period. Inside, you can find many excellent santos, which are statues of saints. Many of these statues are brightly painted and some are very old, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
