The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Holy Fountain (in Spanish: Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta) is a beautiful Roman Catholic church in Murcia, Spain. It is famous for its special Baroque architecture style. This important church is located in Algezares, a small area that is part of the city of Murcia.
History of the Sanctuary
The building of a church at this spot started in 1694. The front part of the church, called the facade, was finished in 1705. It was designed by an architect named Toribio Martínez de la Vega. The facade also features amazing carvings and statues. These were designed by Jaime Bort and completed by José Balaguer.
The first main altarpiece, known as a retablo, was made in the 17th century. It was carved by Antonio Dupar. Sadly, this original altarpiece was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The retablo you see today was created much later, in the 20th century. It was made by Antonio Carrión Valverde and Nicolás Prados López.
During the Civil War, the inside of the church was badly damaged. However, in the middle of the 20th century, the church was fully repaired and restored. This sanctuary belongs to the Diocese of Cartagena. It has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it is a very important cultural site.
