Sara was born in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy. She started her career in animation. She drew storyboards, animated characters, and designed them. She once said that animation felt like being a small part of a big machine.

She became interested in comics after meeting artist David Messina. Before that, she enjoyed animated movies and anime more than comic books. Sara helped Messina with layouts for comics. She worked on the Star Trek comic book series from IDW Publishing. This included titles like Star Trek: Countdown and Star Trek: Nero.

In 2008, she entered a worldwide talent search called Chesterquest. Marvel Comics editor C. B. Cebulski chose her as a finalist. This led to her joining Marvel. Today, she still draws for Marvel from her home in Rome, Italy.

Sara began working for Marvel Comics in 2008. Her first project was the comic series NYX: No Way Home. In 2009, she also worked on Runaways with writer Kathryn Immonen. She teamed up with Kathryn Immonen again for X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back. This comic series came out in December 2009. It told stories about the X-Men character Pixie.

Sara drew a story for the I Am An Avenger comic series. This series was published from 2010 to 2011. She then joined the team for Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man in October 2010, starting with issue #15. When that series finished, Sara worked on Ultimate Fallout in 2011. In this series, she drew the very first pictures of the Spider-Man character as portrayed by Miles Morales. This was a big moment for the Ultimate Marvel universe.

Starting in September 2011, Sara became the main artist for the new Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man. In this series, Miles Morales was the main hero. In August 2018, Sara Pichelli and writer Dan Slott started a brand new Fantastic Four comic series.

How Sara Creates Her Art

Sara uses a special digital drawing tablet called a Cintiq 12wx. When she drew Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, she added many screentones. She said this gave the comic a "pop" feeling. She felt this style suited the series well.

When Sara designs characters, she thinks about their personalities. She considers their background and what makes them unique. This includes their clothes, how they stand, and their facial expressions. She used this same careful approach when she created Miles Morales.
