The Sarah Benedict House is a historic building located at 3751 Prospect Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. This beautiful house is special because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important place that should be protected and remembered for its history. It is also part of the Upper Prospect Avenue Historic District, a neighborhood with many other interesting old buildings.

What Does the Sarah Benedict House Look Like?

The Sarah Benedict House is made of brick and was built in 1883. It is designed in the Queen Anne style. This style was popular in the late 1800s and often features:

  • Different shapes and sizes on each side of the house, making it look unique.
  • A roof that slopes down on all sides, called a hip roof.
  • Fancy brickwork and designs.
  • Roof shingles made of slate that are laid in interesting patterns.
  • A decorative band, called a frieze, between the first and second floors.

No one knows for sure who designed this house. The architect's name has been lost to history!

Who Was Sarah Benedict?

The house was built for Sarah Rathbone Benedict. She was the wife of George A. Benedict, who owned a newspaper in Cleveland called the Cleveland Herald. George Benedict passed away in 1876. Sarah Benedict moved into her new house in 1883 and lived there for many years. She stayed in the home until just before she passed away in 1902, when she was 87 years old.

What Happened to the House Over Time?

For a long time after Sarah Benedict's death, the house was a home for just one family. But as the years passed, the Upper Prospect neighborhood started to change. It became a place with many car dealerships and other businesses. Because of these changes, the Sarah Benedict House was used for different things:

  • It was a boarding house, where people could rent rooms.
  • It became an office building for businesses.
  • It was even used for light manufacturing, which means making small items.
  • Later, it became a popular bar called "The Library" for students from nearby Cleveland State University.

The House Today

Today, the Sarah Benedict House has been carefully fixed up by the Cleveland Restoration Society. This group works to save and restore historic buildings. The house now serves as their main office. You can also rent the house for special events like parties or meetings.

If you want to see the inside of the house, you can arrange a tour. Tours are free for members of the Cleveland Restoration Society.
