Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sarah Holaday was a talented English silversmith who lived a long time ago. She passed away in 1754. Sometimes her name is spelled a bit differently, like Holladay or Holiday. Her first name is also sometimes seen as Susan.

Who Was Sarah Holaday?

Sarah Holaday was a skilled artist who worked with silver. She created beautiful objects from this precious metal.

Her Life and Work

Sarah was married to Edward Holaday, who also worked with metals. After he passed away, Sarah continued their business. She officially registered her own special marks for silver items on July 22, 1719. These marks showed that her silver was real and good quality. She registered another mark on June 15, 1725.

Sarah was known as a goldsmith, even though she worked with silver too. Her shop was called the "Golden Cup." It was located on Grafton Street in Westminster, London.

In 1722, Sarah also got an insurance policy for her business. This was a smart move to protect her work. She even took on an apprentice named David Meades Bishop to teach him the craft. By 1739, it seems she might have stopped working, as her apprentice moved to another shop. Sarah Holaday's will, which is a document about her wishes after she died, was officially approved on May 18, 1754.

Her Amazing Art

One of Sarah Holaday's beautiful creations is a special two-handled cup made in 1719. This cup is now kept at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It shows how skilled she was as a silversmith.
