Sarah Persse was born in a town called Galway, in Ireland. Her family was well-known because they owned a distillery. A distillery is a place that makes drinks like whiskey. Sarah was related to another famous Irish person, Lady Gregory.

Early Life in Galway

Sarah was born and lived in a place called Glenarde in Galway. Her parents were Henry Stratford Persse and Eleanor Persse. Her father, Henry, managed the family's distillery. Sarah was one of ten children in her family. She was the third oldest.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Sarah Persse was a strong supporter of women's right to vote. People who supported this cause were called suffragists. In 1899, Sarah decided to run for a position called "Poor Law Guardian" in Galway. Poor Law Guardians were people who helped manage support for the poor in their local area. Sarah was one of only two women who tried to get this job in her part of Galway.

However, Sarah had to stop her campaign. The day before the elections in 1900, her father sadly passed away. Because of this, she decided not to run for any elections again in the future.

Later Life and Legacy

After her brother and his family moved into the Persse family home, Sarah decided to move to London, England. She lived there for many years. Sarah Persse passed away in London in 1927. She is remembered as an Irish suffragist who believed in equal rights for women.
