Sarah Pue's Early Life and Family
Sarah Pue was born Sarah Gibbal. Her father, John Gibbal, worked as a skinner in Dublin. A skinner prepared animal skins. Sarah married James Pue on September 29, 1761.
Taking Over the Family Business
James Pue had taken over his uncle's businesses in 1758. These included printing, publishing, and owning Dick's Coffee House. When James died in December 1762, Sarah bravely took charge of everything.
New Partnerships and Growth
In April 1763, Sarah married John Roe. They had two sons together. John Roe had already worked with James Pue since 1758. They printed a newspaper called Pue's Occurrences. They also ran Dick's Coffee House until 1769. After that, John's brother, Crompton Roe, took over the coffee house.
Running the Newspaper and Other Ventures
When her second husband, John Roe, died in December 1773, Sarah took full control of Pue's Occurrences. She worked with her brother, David Gibbal, on the newspaper. In June 1776, she sold the newspaper business to John Hillary.
Sarah also sold "patent medicines" from her shop. These were special medicines sold directly to people. She sold them from 1762 to 1776 at Skinner Row. Then, in 1777, she moved her medicine business to College Green. After 1777, Sarah Pue is no longer found in historical records.
