Sarasota Film Festival facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Sarasota Film Festival is an exciting film festival held every April in Sarasota, Florida. Its main goal is to celebrate the amazing art of making movies. It also honors the talented people who create them. The festival hosts an international event and offers programs all year. These programs help the community learn and grow.

Festival History

The Sarasota Film Festival started after another film festival ended in 1996. John Welch began planning a new festival for independent films. He brought in Jody Kielbasa to help lead the event.

Early Days

The very first "mini-festival" happened in January 1999. It showed eight independent films and featured six actors. There was also a special fundraising event. Local leaders supported the festival, seeing it as a good way to help tourism.

In 2002, a newspaper called the St. Petersburg Times wrote about how the festival could help movies get noticed. In 2003, Variety, a famous entertainment magazine, said the festival was "edgier" and "more interesting." In 2006, the festival's start date moved from January to April.

Growing Up

The festival has grown a lot since it began. For example, in 2014, it showed 252 films over ten days. More than 100 filmmakers and actors came to Sarasota for the event. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune newspaper said in 2014 that the festival had become a great place. It was a "showcase for serious independent films" and for people who love them.

The festival also includes smaller, special programs. One is the "Through Women's Eyes" Film Festival, which works with UN Women. Another is "YouthFEST," which is made just for students. The Sarasota Film Festival also has an Education Program. This program includes a summer camp where students can learn to make documentaries.
