Satarupa Sanyal is a talented Indian film director, producer, actress, and poet. She is also a social activist. She is known for her work in 'parallel cinema,' which means she makes movies that are often different from mainstream Bollywood films. These films usually focus on realistic stories and important social issues.

Early Life and Education
Satarupa Sanyal was born on November 12, 1962. She studied Veterinary Science at the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Later, she continued her studies in Veterinary Pathology for her master's degree.
While she was a student, she started a cultural and literary magazine called Aw. This magazine is still being published today. Satarupa Sanyal has two daughters, Chitrangada Satarupa and Ritabhari Chakraborty, who are both actors.
Career in Arts
Satarupa Sanyal received training in Hindustani classical music and Rabindra Sangeet. She performed her music for All India Radio.
She began acting in films in 1985. At first, she acted in plays and telefilms for Doordarshan. She played lead roles in many productions. Some of these included Sukh, Aparichita, Uttaradhikar, and Bikalpa.
Becoming a Director
Satarupa Sanyal later stopped acting to focus on film production. She worked as an assistant director and scriptwriter for seven years. She learned from the well-known director Utpalendu Chakrabarty.
In 1998, she directed and produced her first film, Anu. She made this film under her own company, Scud. Since then, she has directed several other films. These include Atatayee, Tanyabi Firti, Kalo Chita, Once Upon A Time In Kolkata, Tobuo Basanta, and Onyo Opalaa.
She has also made important short films. One short film, Fool for Love, starred Anurag Kashyap and Ritabhari. Another, How about a Kiss, featured Rajat Kapoor and Ritabhari.
Serving the Film Industry
Satarupa Sanyal was a member of the Central Board of Film Certification for four years. This board helps decide which films can be shown to the public. She also served as a national jury member for Indian Panorama many times. She was a jury member for the National Award for Feature Film. She also helped select films for the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF).
Awards and Recognition
At the 37th National Film Awards, Satarupa Sanyal won an award. She received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics for her work on the film Chhandaneer.
